Working towards something

I've decided recently, to find something I can be successful in, something that I can work towards and excel in.  I really do love supporting Brody in school and his other life achievements, but I think once in a while, I need to do something for myself as well.  Since we don't have kids yet to challenge me and my job isn't really doing it for me (I love my job, it's just too easy and effortless),  I decided to find something else. Well 2 something else's:

Learning another language- Portuguese
I found a free website online to help with learning another language (which I can do sometimes in my spare time at work) and then of course I have Brody to help me.  It's been really fun so far, but I've only learned a handful words.  I know it'll take a while until I can actually get good enough to use it, especially if I'm not around lots of other people who are speaking Portuguese constantly, but at least its something to work towards.

AND

Becoming a fancy (wedding-type) cake decorator (to hopefully make some sort of an income with later in life).
I've been wanting to do this for a while now.  I want it to become my little "hobby-that-I-can-also-make-money-from" thing.  So.... I signed up to take Cake Decorating classes.  I start next Tuesday, and I can't wait!  I'm not sure if these classes will teach me everything I need to know, but it's a start and hopefully I can find a way to keep getting better.  I am so excited to someday be able to make cakes like these:

I know, some of these are probably WAYYY to elaborate for me to ever be able to do, but I still find it so exciting!!

Fun-filled Labor Day weekend

I wanted to do something fun for Labor Day weekend, since it was the last one before Brody started school, so we planned it and made it happen! We wanted to escape the dreaded Phoenix heat, so we decided to drive up north, near Flagstaff and take a little  Arizona Road Trip.

We camped for 2 nights and saw a few interesting things along the way that exist here in Arizona.

We stayed in Holbrook, AZ (2 hours east of Flagstaff) the first night.

and drove through the Petrified Forest the next day, which was actually pretty cool. It's crazy to think that there used to be a big forest of trees out here in the desert.  It was also very weird to see a big tree stump that looks like wood, but feels like stone.

Can you believe those stumps below are now rocks?!
And this used to be a tree! (Some have crystallized over time)

These trees existed in this kind of terrain! Crazy.

Along with all the tree artifacts, we also saw some other cool things in the Petrified Forest including: Indian drawings and dwellings...

Some cool looking hills with colored stripes (part of the Painted Desert National Park)...

And just some overall pretty scenery...

We drove on the Historic Route 66 a little bit along the way, where there were some cool artifacts about it on the side of the road.
We stopped off in Winslow, AZ for lunch and happened upon this monument: (from the song 'take it easy' by the Eagle's)

We then headed back to Flagstaff and met up with Dan and Meghann for our second night of camping.

We had some yummy tin foil dinners and of course roasted mallows and starburst.

I love that it got down to 40* that night!

The next day, we stopped by Montezuma Castle, which is an ancient Indian cliff-dwelling.  It was said to have been built around 700 AD!! Still looks pretty sturdy to me. Crazy stuff.

It was a very fun weekend, and I'm glad we got to spend some time outside and see some of the natural monuments that are unique to AZ. Now, back to real life!

Update from Arizona

We've been back for 2 weeks now, and so far it's been good.  The first week was spent moving in, restocking all our food and other such supplies and just relaxing.  The second week, I was busy working at my new job (more details on that further down) while Brody continued with his relaxing.

He starts school next week for his final year at Thunderbird!!  He can't wait.  I'm excited too, to be able to walk over to school/work together, have lunch together, and walk home (if we happen to get done at the same time).  I'm excited further, to also be a part of the school that has become such a big part of Brody's life and make it part of mine as well.  It will be great being involved more in the school and getting to know some of the same people.

My job so far is great!  I love the people that I work with and although I'm not working full time like I thought, but I AM however, working 30 hours instead of 20 like they originally told me.  So that's good.  The work is pretty easy, but at the same time, not too boring.  I work in the Academic and International Services department and my job is to assist students who either call, e-mail or come in, with scheduling appointments to see an advisor or help international students get all their immigration paper work figured out.  I'm so happy to have a job right away this time, instead of having to wait 2 1/2 months and I'm especially happy that it's a job I really enjoy.  I've always wanted to work in a school, so I guess I can count that goal as accomplished!!

In other news, we moved into a different apartment this time, but still in the same complex.  It actually ended up being right above our old one, which we LOVE!! Other than the hassle of bringing all our stuff up a bunch of stairs, being on the second floor is ideal for so many reasons:

1). Wayyy more privacy. We can leave our blinds open all day and not worry about people walking by and checking us out while we're eating dinner (that was always weird).
2). In the winter, we'll be able to leave our patio door and windows open all night and even during the day when we're not here.  No one can reach the window to get in and rob us!
3). No noise of people jumping around above us.

It's been raining a lot here since we've been back, which has cooled the weather down a bit, but has made it super humid!  Except, it's been so hot before now and when it's not raining it still get up there, so the pool doesn't even feel refreshing during the day, so instead, we go at night.  It's perfect.

Salomon has been a little bored since being back.  I guess going from having a big yard to run around in and people around all the time all summer to being stuck inside with just the two of us is pretty depressing to him. Does this look like a sad, depressed dog or what?  Although we did take him to the dog park the other day..... Funny story about that: when we pulled up, we tried to get his leash hooked to his collar, but he was so excited he squeezed out of his collar and started sprinting toward all the other dogs, only he didn't quite notice the chain link fence that separated him from them (it was night time, in his defense). Needless to say, it was pretty funny watching him run into a fence at full speed.

Well that's all for now.  Not much else is really going on for now.  Just getting back into the swing of things.  But I'm excited for Labor Day weekend coming up, we have some fun adventures planned.  Hopefully it all works out!
