Fun-filled Labor Day weekend

I wanted to do something fun for Labor Day weekend, since it was the last one before Brody started school, so we planned it and made it happen! We wanted to escape the dreaded Phoenix heat, so we decided to drive up north, near Flagstaff and take a little  Arizona Road Trip.

We camped for 2 nights and saw a few interesting things along the way that exist here in Arizona.

We stayed in Holbrook, AZ (2 hours east of Flagstaff) the first night.

and drove through the Petrified Forest the next day, which was actually pretty cool. It's crazy to think that there used to be a big forest of trees out here in the desert.  It was also very weird to see a big tree stump that looks like wood, but feels like stone.

Can you believe those stumps below are now rocks?!
And this used to be a tree! (Some have crystallized over time)

These trees existed in this kind of terrain! Crazy.

Along with all the tree artifacts, we also saw some other cool things in the Petrified Forest including: Indian drawings and dwellings...

Some cool looking hills with colored stripes (part of the Painted Desert National Park)...

And just some overall pretty scenery...

We drove on the Historic Route 66 a little bit along the way, where there were some cool artifacts about it on the side of the road.
We stopped off in Winslow, AZ for lunch and happened upon this monument: (from the song 'take it easy' by the Eagle's)

We then headed back to Flagstaff and met up with Dan and Meghann for our second night of camping.

We had some yummy tin foil dinners and of course roasted mallows and starburst.

I love that it got down to 40* that night!

The next day, we stopped by Montezuma Castle, which is an ancient Indian cliff-dwelling.  It was said to have been built around 700 AD!! Still looks pretty sturdy to me. Crazy stuff.

It was a very fun weekend, and I'm glad we got to spend some time outside and see some of the natural monuments that are unique to AZ. Now, back to real life!

You kids know how to many an ordianry weekend, extraordinary! Funny the landscape difference between here and there. Between here and anywhere! The NW rocks! So does Europe, and your pics of that place were so beautiful it makes my heart hurt just thinking about them!

What a fun fun trip!! That is so cool about the Eagles song. Also, I love petrified things, they make me feel funny inside, they also remind me of Harry Potter. My favorite thing about this post is that Brody's arm looks like Mr. Burns in that first photo of you guys together...good times.

How am I just now looking at this post? Where have I been? I loved seeing everything! soooo cool. You look really skinny- I can see that lost 5 lbs (is it really?) those are some really neat places you got to see! I'm so glad you guys took that trip. I didn't notice any picts w/ Sal in them- I need to see one of him being happy because I still have the depressed one stuck in my head. . .

I loved the post and all the pictures, but I have to admit-and maybe it's because it's almost midnight and I'm crazy by this time of day-that throughout the whole post my main concern was Brody's hair, and what does he do with it on Sunday's, or at the temple?

Nice road trip! I've lived her 4 years and not even seen that stuff, and now will have to copy you guys and go on an AZ tour next summer. I'm so glad you had a great weekend and got to see so many things.
