Poor little bird

So, our dog Salomon loves birds.  He loves to chase them.  He goes ballistic every time he sees one.  Obviously, he never catches them, but it's pretty funny to watch.  Anyway, yesterday as Brody and I were taking him for a walk, we were talking about what we thought would happen if he actually did catch one (more like what would happen if he just came across one that had already fallen to the ground).  In the end, we decided that he'd probably just stare at it and not really know what to do.

Well, no more than 5 minutes later, we arrived home to find a bird sitting in our wreath on the front door.  It just kept sitting there even though we were only standing about 2 feet away from it, so Brody tapped the wreath to get it to fly away.  But, instead of flying away out into the night, it flew across the porch, ran into our neighbor's door on the other side, fell to the ground and landed right in front of Salomon.

The answer to the question we had not more than 5 minutes ago is about to unfold right before our very eyes!!-- and the answer is...........

He would kill it!!!

As soon as Sal grabbed the bird with his mouth, I started screaming and ran down the stairs.  Brody took care of the bird, but there was still some blood and feathers all over the porch.  I was disgusted, terrified and sad all at the same time (but did manage to snap a few pictures).

I guess that's just a Golden Retriever's instinct, even though we've never trained him to kill anything. I still feel pretty bad for that poor little bird though.

Oh that poor little bird! Funny that you screamed and ran downstairs, although I probably would have done the same. And how funny that you guys had just been talking about that.

Hey you! I am so glad you found my blog. It's funny how you can loose touch so easily, and then regain it. It looks like you guys are doing great...minus the birdie! Poor thing.

That is so sad. I really think your experience with the dead bird when you were 4 has followed you through life, and you just can't help but feel sorry for the "poor little bird. . ."

So do I need to be worried about Sal around my girls now that he has tasted blood?

Totally just kidding. That story makes me like Sal even more. Hey it could be worse, he could have just peed himself again ;)
